KINGSTON,
NY - SEPTEMBER, 2005
The Kingston Lighthouse was built at the same time as the D-H Canal to protect shipping from the shoals just to the north. The lighthouse was built on pilings down to the bedrock, but the adjacent land has slowly sunk so that access by land is no longer possible.
Once privately owned and operated, the lighthouse is now in the care of the U.S. Coastguard.
The Kingston-Rhinebeck toll bridge (25 cents) can be seen in the background, about 4 miles to the north.
