DOODLETOWN HIKE No 3

Some of the ornate shrubs and gardens of the villagers are still growing. Through the unkempt overgrowth of the old gardens there are magnificent views of the Hudson River.

This is the kind of spot where you need a map - this left turn onto the Cornell Mine trail could easily be missed.
Actually, we did miss it on the first hike.
The old main road through the hamlet passes west of the Doodletown reservoir.
There were once two schools and two churches in the hamlet. About 1922(?) one resident paid for electricity to be brought into the hamlet, and apparently the lines still carry power.
You can spend a lot of time exploring the old ruins and gardens, but we just kept walking, along what used to be 'Pleasant Valley Road'.
I must check this, but I think this tree was planted about 1780.
