What happened to some of the Old Pals who served with us? Fortunately some of those we remember from 47 Regt. Royal Artillery and the REME Workshops, stationed in Napier Barracks, Dortmund about 1957 - 1966 (or thereabouts) have found us, and their stories are presented here. |
Hi John - I've thoroughly enjoyed reading through your site which brought back many memories of Crookham and Dortmund in the '50s and '60s. I was but a sprog in those days and my father was Sgt. "Jock" Graham, 4Bty. Propellants No1 (sadly passed away in 1988). I remember Thor as a puppy playing in the woods with us kids, then growing up and becoming a typical squadie chasing all the female dogs in range...., kart racing with Sgts. Ramsbottom and Harding, helping to lay out the track on the airfield, being allowed to tag on the back in the ladies races and winning a Delft ashtray at one meeting (Mum was not impressed as I had been caught pinchin' Dad's Woodbines at the age of 10!). Sgt. Fairbrother teaching me how to play billiards (and how to drink Carlsberg) in the Sergeants Mess with my Dad. Swimming in the pool (and the pond at the far end of the airfield), winding up the Americans by scrumping the fruit from outside their block. The Aplerbek explosion etc. etc..... Have quite a few photos if you are interested, and it would be good to get in contact with the karters again if they would want to talk with me after all these years. Keep up the great work and thanks again. Kindest regards, Malcolm Graham (now a grand dad myself!) October, 2010
