Firing Panel Operator 3 Battery 47 Regt. RA |
What happened to some of the Old Pals who served with us? Fortunately some of those who we remember from 47 Regt. Royal Artillery and the REME Workshops, stationed in Napier Barracks, 1957 - 1966 (or thereabouts) have found us, and we present their stories here. |
Hi John
I'm glad there are still some people from those days still about.
I have been in touch with a couple of lads from 27 Regt in the past. 27 regt has an old boys reunion every year apparently.
I was in Launching Troop, 3 Battery, from 1958 to 1964, mostly as the firing panel operator. Smallish, wore glasses. Rose to the dizzy height of Lance Bombardier in 59 and stayed there. I don't think that my attitude to army discipline did me any favours.
In Dortmund I went out with that little blonde girl, Karin, who drove the NAAFI truck, much to the annoyance of a lot of squaddies i remember. I wonder what happened to her?
After Feb 64 I did various jobs, truck driving at first for a couple of months, then I got a job managing a health club in Liverpool, and moved on from there to be a freelance entertainments manager.
I also managed a pop group, not unfortunately a succesful one, for a year.
Got married and divorced. Became a sales manager and area manager (Firm went bust, not my fault). Worked in textiles for 15 years as machine foreman, then took early retirement at 60.
Remarried 17 years ago (great sucess). Have also been president of outlaw motorcycle club Freedom Riders MC - we have been going for twenty years. Currently I have a VN 1500 Kawazaki.
I have travelled quite a lot, central and southern America mostly, although we have been to the USA a couple of times where both my sisters live. We have travelled extensively in Europe mostly on our motorcycles. My wife rides as well, we live just outside Blackburn in Lancashire but now that I have retired I would like to move, don't know where to though. My wife is 26 years younger than me so she wants to carry on working.
We are off to Kos for a week in two hours so I have to check that I have everything; memory like a sieve.
Please keep in touch.
Regards
Chris.
