Feb, 2005

Johnny Parker was one of the REME Workshops general drivers, and I believe his first trip to Benbecula was in 1962. Like me, he had copious free time and a desire to explore the neighbourhood. This photo was taken on the way back to camp after we had walked clockwise round the airport then northwards and east along the beach until it heads south again, then back inland. We were talking about how the landscape was so bare that even telephone poles seemed to fill the horizon.

The buildings in the left background are administration offices etc. on the airfield. At the far left is the HM Customs shed, and just to its right is the water tower.
