Stories from 47 Regt days . . . |
The photos were taken on an exercise at Hohne for the N.A.T.O Bigwigs, where we had a Power unit failure on Erector 01 BX 83. This would have meant the Exercise demonstration would have to be cancelled. Capt Middleton was O.C and I suggested we take the canopy rails off a Bedford RL and send it to Dortmund to get a power unit from a spare Erector. Capt M said this was not possible, being in the field and having no special tools or lifting equipment. I said I would have a go to save him and the Gunners embarrassment. My lads and I succeeded by using the Recovery Scammel as a crane, and I am sure the Recce Mech was a CPL Harman. On return to Dortmund I was asked by Capt M to write in detail how the engine change was achieved. I thought this was nonsense as I told him you just improvise, as necessity is the mother of invention. However I did as I was told and to my amazement I eventually got a Monetary award from the War Office for my ingenuity in the field. I am standing on the right in Picture 1, on the left in Picture 2.
