It was coming up to Christmas 1962 and a few of us single blokes were granted leave in UK on condition that we were back in camp by the 1st of January. I decided to go home and Mick Toogood asked if I could give him a lift to Dover as he then lived in Kent, at the time I had a 1948 Ford Anglia.
On Boxing Day the snow came and it turned out as the worst winter for years, the snow staying for 3 months. I started out early to get to Dover for the return trip, the snow was deep and a lot of the roads not cleared but having 15 inch wheel the old girl made light weather of it and I arrived in Dover at about 9 am to find Mick waiting, his first words to me was "you are the last person I expected to get here" he had tuned up hoping to get a lift back with who ever turned up. Well the trip back over Belgium and Germany was horrendous but we made it, the only ones on time. Mick said afterwards I'll never take the mickey out of your car again my Merc would not have made it. He also met his wife as a result of that trip but I'll let him tell that story.
