Stories from 47 Regt days . . . |
Can anybody remember anything about Thor, the regimental mascot?
Huge great slathering uncontrollable hound.
I once saw the L/Bdr who was in charge of him laying on the grass near the M&G block one sunny Saturday afternoon reading a book. Thor must have decided that there was indisputable justification to be somewhere else immediately, and took off, dragging the squaddie on the end of his leash wriggling and squirming across the grass.
For some reason the L/Bdr had a fairly substantial sheaf of what looked from a distance like admin. records, and as Thor gathered speed he got dragged across the ground through his book, blanket and all these papers. Everything started blowing away in the wind. No wonder some military records are described as 'Incomplete or Missing'.

Thor; I'd really forgotten about him.
As you say you didn't want to get too close to him especially when you had your bulled boots on. He left a trail where ever he went.
I remember he crapped on the carpet outside the Regimental orderly room, RSM Caplin nearly blew a gasket; he went ballistic, really good to watch!!
I think the dog went back to the original owner when the regiment disbanded.

I remember Thor from Crookham days. Once when on guard it was my unfortunate lot to be given the job of taking him over the road and into the trees for a toilet break. We had got as far as the gate in good order when Thor saw something in the woods and took off at high speed with me in tow. Studded boots didn't provide any traction on the ashfelt and so I crossed the road at attention like a water skier and had merely to jump in the air to miss the pavement and land on the soft earth the other side.
