Stories from 47 Regt days . . .

N.B. I had asked Lou about his little-mentioned career with the Army's entry in the Monte-Carlo Rallye.

Yes I did work with the REME officers club entry, which was a factory provided TR3A, but due to the rules of the class they entered we were not allowed to modify anything other than change carb needles and jets (in the days before fuel injection!). The TR3A's were a little bit special, this model was the first to be fitted with front disc brakes which I recall were quite a handful.

I had done a lot of work with the TR's earlier when we were in Singapore. The car (a TR2) belonged to Capt John Ingram-Cotton and I did all the preparation and tuning for him when he raced it. It was reputed to be the fastest standard TR on the circuit.

John was the L.A.D. CO whom I served with in Singapore. He was also co-driver in the Officer Club entry. I can't recall who the other driver was. This car, and in fact none of the service entry cars, finished; all out with mechanical failures.

Running the Go-kart team for 47 Regt. was my passion for a while and I did a stint as the secretary for the B.A.O.R. karting association. Like a lot of sports it died through money. We had some members who were not short of cash and could buy performance and this drove the little guy out through lack of success.

We did at one point have quite a thriving association with a lot of clubs formed throughout BAOR.
