Capt. Hugh Wright introduced us to rock climbing and usually Gus Culpin and I went with him or met him and his wife at the rocks, which were situated just outside Menden in Sauerland (not to be confused with Minden).

To start with he taught us to climb as none of us had done any before and showed us how to use the ropes and hardware. He was very encouraging and after a bit Gus and I started to lead the climbs. In the summer Gus and I would go in my car and take a couple of one-man tents from stores, camp at a beautiful site at Amecke on the banks of the Sorpe See and meet with Capt Wright at the rocks the following morning.

We had a good laugh the first couple of times we used the camp site. On the first occasion we put our 2 one-man tents up side by side and then went to the office to pay. The old boy there demanded 2 marks, 1 for each tent. We protested saying that our 2 tents together took up less space than any of the German family tents pitched by us but he wasn't having any of it, 2 tents: 2 Deutschmarks. The following week when we arrived we put the tents end to end making one long tent, he was happy with that, 1 tent: 1 Deutschmark.
