Stories from 47 Regt days . . .
Geoff Moxon
About a year before demob, I was a guard commander and ended up on a charge, as we hung the Union Jack upside down in the morning. (I still have no idea
which way is up on the UJ). I was marched in to the charge, (you know the drill, where you have to take your belt off and they do the left right, left right, thing faster
than anyone can march). Anyway the RSM (all I can remember is Andy Capp) was taking this really seriously, however the REME officer who was hearing the
charge and me were not. You will remember this officer's name probably, as he had a Geordie ex coal miner driver who was incredible with the Austin Champ.
The officer I remember was well liked as he was very smart and realised that we were not idiots either.
Anyway part way through the reading of the charges, I started to get supressed giggles and the more I tried to supress them the worse it got. It was clear that the
REME officer was also finding the whole thing laughable and he and I started to grunt as the giggles would not allow themselves to be surpressed. Eventually he
screamed mid laughter, "Get the hell out of here Corporal" and as I left I could hear him howling with laughing. Andy Capp was totally furious, but did not
manage to "get me later" as he promised.
There's nothing down here.
