MAIN GATE
Spring, 2002

Napier Barracks

Of course we all remember driving through the main gate! Those of us living on camp saw this view mostly at night, returning from a few beers in Brackel or even Dortmund and heading for the wicket-gate on the left near the guardroom, where you had to sign back in.
Some of us that managed to find a hiring or rental would see this view in the morning. For some strange reason the RSM required married personnel to be in possession of a chit affixed to the windshield showing the owner had permission to drive a car in camp. Since he was the only one allowed to give permission and chits, it became a war of wills and subterfuge as to how to drive a car to work without incurring his dissatisfaction. If he spotted a REME driver you probably wouldn't make it.
The ridiculous part was that members of 27 Regt. were exempt from this requirement.
