Spring is here!
The first group of migrating red-shouldered blackbirds has arrived, so Spring must be here soon! Unfortunately they arrived just after a snowstorm two days ago and found the local groceries shelves a bit empty, hence they raided our squirrel feeder.

When they first arrive blackbirds always scout around in flocks of 50 to 100 birds. The speckled ones are females. In a few weeks they will split up and establish territories for themselves, then start to to build nests.
Our orphaned deer seems to be surviving the winter, although it's very hard for her. There are several herds of two to five animals in our area, and none of them will let this one feed near them. We've seen some of the older does chase her off, biting her in the process - bite marks on her right shoulder are visible. She still has her juvenile white spots on the flanks, so I think she's about 9 - 10 months old.
She seems to like whatever falls out of the bird feeder, and our bushes.
